My husband started social security at age 62. But eligible in 2 months for Medicare in US.

Can he apply on-line in Costa Rica?

medicare does not pay outside of the US - you probably already know this, but everyone should be aware that those having TRICARE are just about out of luck in costa rica - due to massive fraud back around the 2005/2006 time frame, TRICARE blacklisted hospitals in costa rica!!

I'm pretty sure that he can enroll online - and may even be automatically enrolled without action. Go to Medicare.gov.

Sherman - Can fill out form on-line but must print out and send in. Not automatic like in US.

I did file for Medicare from Costa Rica, but we have kept a mailing address in the USA. At that time we had a mail forwarding address in Miami, but now we use our daughter's address in Colorado.

If you only have a foreign mailing address, my understanding from a few years ago was that you can still be automatically enrolled in Medicare Part A but not Part B. I didn't get Part B anyways since I get my meds in CR. I use Part A for doctor appointments when visiting family in the USA (and had a colonoscopy last year under Medicare).

Sherman - you are exactly right in what we also heard. We have an international digital mail service, but our main address is in CR, and where our social security mail has always been sent. Just today had to send off form to enroll in Part B.

We did not want to rely on family - his unreliable, and mine already has responsibilities for son and family overseas.

Just a clarification to my earlier post ... I do get Part B Medicare, as I use it for doctor visits while in the USA - but I do not get Part D for prescription medications since I buy most of my meds in CR ... and get many at no additional cost thru CAJA.
