Bringing Kitty

Hi all – I’ve been researching/planning my retirement explorations through central and south America for many months. I plan to start off in CR near San Jose to get a footing (and decompress) and then take plenty of time exploring Panama, Columbia, Ecuador and wherever it takes me.
I’ve mentioned my little kitty on some of the forums/threads. So now I’m asking if anyone has experience with bringing a cat in a carrier under the seat in the cabin. Does anyone have experience with an airline (good or bad), or tips on getting through customs. I’ve researched the paperwork/requirements and he’s getting his vaccinations.
Thank you!

I gave the wrong impression. I Plan to settle in and make short runs without Kitty.

The Costa Rica and Colombia forums always have good information from helpful people who know the ropes and have traveled a lot. So I'm asking all of the seasoned pro's.

Thanks again.

Hello -

I brought a 7 lb cat in a soft-side carrier on the plane with me in July 2018.
_ We flew American - $125 pet fee
- Advice is to get a middle seat as the aisle and window have less area under the seat. My husband and I actually ended up with a whole row to our selves and tried every storage option.
- American allows pets in first class; Delta does not - only service animals.
- If it's not a non-stop or it's a flight with a long layover, consider getting a hotel at the layover city for the night. Cats are different than dogs regarding eating and using the litter box. (We purposely got a 18 hr layover and stayed overnight at a Doubletree in Texas; other than dealing with security twice and the cost of a hotel night, it was the right thing to do for a cat.
- Had all the vet signatures, USDA paperwork with the stamp - in fact, had a whole folder set up. Never showed it to anyone. American just asked her name and age after physically seeing her and collected the fee. Customs in CR didn't even look at the carrier.
- The carrier required a separate security search in a private room. They had me remove the cat and sent the carrier to be wanded.
- Also, a ziploc bag full of cat litter was of interest and had to be wanded as well.
- I found a great carrier on Amazon - here's the link. https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B01F0RUQCO/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Good Luck!
