Homeschooling in CR

I read that it's not legal to homeschool. We will be residents of the country but really are looking to homeschool until we can figure out the school system there. Has anyone had legal issues with homeschooling?

It is obviously your choice, but starting out life IN Costa Rica at odds with the local authorities does not seem like a good idea. Costa Rica does not allow home schooling. You have many ways to determine where to live and what school your child will attend. Home schooling is not a legal option,

Years ago we had a family living very near us, who didn't want their 3 children attending the local school, so PANI got involved and told them their children would be taken away from them, if they didn't follow the rules. Which they did, sporadically, just enough to keep PANI 'off of their backs.' However, this family had no electricity or internet access at this time.

The government/PANI doesn't get involved if the children attend the local schools but using home schooling to complement the public school system.

About 20 years ago there was a well established business man and his family in the Central Valley, who was only using home schooling and PANI took the father to court and the family fled the country to avoid jail time.

It was all over the CR news at the time, but I can't find any reference to it now.

We know via friends of a family from the states who recently "fled" as a arrest warrant was issued for them to comply. CR is not like the USA. There is no wiggle room or exceptions. For example take COVID measures....even doctors were ARRESTED for not getting the vaccine and giving it...

CR is very tourist friendly but is not very receptive to expats living here on a more permanent basis (despite what you might read). Lots of hurdles to jump through (can not work here except digitally, little to no access to banking system, etc.) and any mistake and you are out.

This sounds like good advice, Kohl. Homeschooling as an educational supplement while leaving the "heavy lifting" to the professionals who aim to equip children for survival in the society that they are a part of only makes sense.
