Is it important to become a resident of Costa Rica in order to enjoy many of the benefits.

I would like to work part time in some way while there and wonder if not being a citizen is an impediment

Salaries are very low for "blue collar" jobs but not "white collar" jobs especially anything related to programming/web development, etc. Lots of folks coming in post covid that can work remotely from here and with the very low cost of housing, quickly driving prices up. Reminds me of the current effect of massive wave of Californians (average price of home now, where my son lives) is 8ook for a 70 year old 1,000 sq ft house! So all the new "millionaires" have been coming to Arizona (where we are from) and the prices have rocketed higher - 70% in one year!

We gave up after almost 4 years of trying to gain Rentista status (Pensionado is easier but still onerous). If you are only here 6 months or less (we travel/cruise a lot this is just our "home" base), and with the CAJA premiums going up so much (at least for Rentista, not as bad for Pensionado status), why bother?

Being a CR Citizenship and Permanent Resident is different, however after living in CR as a resident for 7 years you can apply to become a citizen.

You can legally work once you have gained Permanent residency, which will take between 4-5 years from your initial application, have a work visa or work online.

The main benefit for residency is that you will be covered by the CAJA, the socialized healthcare system.

You should note that salaries are very low there.
