Hi....
I really need help!!.....I have lived in The US for almost 2 years(I'm Danish!) - and I've been in a relationship with an American for over 1 1/2 years now. Now my Visa is up and I'm back in Denmark - and trying really hard to get my boyfriend over here. Does anybody know how to do this - I mean how to get a work permit etc. here in Denmark - is there any special requirements for Americans etc. Please....I need all the help I can get.....the rules made here in Denmark while I've been gone regarding immigrants are driving me crazy!!! I saw somebody in the forum mentioning working as an English translater at Berlitz -- is that possible?? Thank you so much in advance!

Those who are married to a Dane are being refused entry to Denmark if they are not above a certain age - 24 or 28 I think, so being unmarried doesn't help at all. Many Danish-foreign couples declined entry to Denmark settle in Sweden under EU rules and later move to Denmark, again under EU rules. However, I read recently that nearly 100 such couples living in Sweden have been waiting nearly a year for a residence permit in Denmark, in breach of EU law.

The new immigration law is a scandal for a Western country, and the administration for foreigners (Udlændingestyrelsen) administer the law as harshly and inhumanly as possible. They already did so in 1993, when my foreign wife was declined entry because of a minor thing that I will not elaborate on here. Because of that, I emigrated from Denmark that year to England under EU law, and I have never returned, and I will never do so.

More than one official human rights organisation has criticised Denmark for breaching human rights with their cruel immigration law, but there is little chance of getting it softened right now.

The best advice to give to anyone considering a move to Denmark is: DON'T DO IT. The country looks nice on the surface, but once you understand the Danish character of envy, it can become a nightmare. In your situation of already being in Denmark, my best, honest advice is to emigrate to a more human country. Family unity and human feelings have no value in Denmark, as opposed to many other Western countries.

Over the last 20 years of socialist rule, Denmark had let immigration spiral out of control. Now, every decent immigration with a good cause is paying for that mismangement. The actual reason for the current law seems to be to prevent forced marriages for Turks who have obtained Danish nationality who find their brides in Turkey. The present government finds it justified to breach human rights for Danish-foreign couples just to prevent these forced marriages. A parallel in road traffic would be that since they know that a number of drivers are speeding, they would introduce automatic, regular fines for speeding to all drivers.

I keep my Danish nationality, but I cannot identify myself with such a mentality. It's shameful.

This is very late. The "rules" are at www.udlst.dk under familie sammenføring, of course. Read them and weep.

Relationships between american men and danish women that are transported from the US to DK fail at an alarmingly high rate in Denmark. You changed in the US, didn't you? Well, he will change when he comes here. For one thing, he will be very dependant on you and feel lost in the culture. He also won't be prepared for who you are now that you are back. It takes lot of hard work, patience, sacrifice and commitment to over come this - on both your parts.
