Altitude Concerns in Quito

I'm thinking of moving to quito in january, and i was wondering about the altitude. Right now i live in syracuse, ny, which is about 1500 feet above sea level. Is it hard to adjust there? I'm 21 and not in bad shape, but not in good shape either. Also, I smoke. Should I be concerned?
