Points of view regarding health care Ecuador

A well known Ecuador promoter sent an email out earlier this week touting the wonderful aspects of medical care available in Ecuador. While I am sure the experience he mentioned is true I do disagree with some of the observations overall and believe the experience he had or mentioned of others having are the exception rather than the rule in Ecuador.

May I suggest the following news stories as another perspective of medical experiences in Ecuador. I have a fair number myself along with my family and I would say they were less than positive or anything close to what the email stated about the medical system.

One should talk to as many people as possible who have lived in Ecuador and ask for candid information as to experiences and recommendations. There are some fine doctors in Ecuador but overall you may have some good experiences but again I reiterate that is not always the case and the chances of holding the system accountable is limited. The stories below may be insightful and does not include the French woman shot in Ecuador a few years ago - her friends rushed her to a clinica and she was denied immediate attention because of her insurance card ---- when finally granted treatment she expired.

I also recommend getting to know as many people at your country's embassy or consulate and ask staff who they use. Both the Quito and Guayaquil U.S. facilities keep a list online of providers - but I would still ask staff off the record who they go to and which medical facilities.
