Visited the Cuenca Tenis and Golf course CC yesterday. Here is the skinny. About 9K to join, 120 a month dues, 20 goes toward food there. 3 restaurants, 9 hole course, 8 or so clay tenis courts, heated swimming pool, pool table, weight room, and reciprocal agreements with Quito, Guayaquil, Salinas area, Bogata, and Peru CC's. No carts availale to rent, caddies available from $5-8 for the day. Food there was excellent and prices were low. Very nice complex, and we didnt see anyone on the course, or pool from noon to 3. Just posting info on those who are interested, not advertising.

Handicaps vary from where you play as you may well know. From looking at the Cuenca course I have faith I could shoot a 90 first time on the course. And after a few rounds probably low 80's if I dont pass out from all the uphill walking. Greens looked great and fairways were plush. Now I have to talk my wife into letting go of that entry fee money.

Great information! Thanks.
We're buying in Cuenca and this post really hits the spot b/c what Cuenca lacks in sports for many expats would be a golf course. So, a couple questions.
Possible to even get on?
What about less that a full membership? Possible to play a few times a month? That would be ideal for me I think. -td

Not possible at this time to play occasionally. We met some members that said there were temporary memberships available. About 300 a month. They didnt tell us about the temp memberships in the presentation, as I believe they were trying to get us to join for the full ride. If you go to speak with them, you might want to bring an interpreter, unless you speak Spanish.

Thanks again for the info. Maybe the club'll change its mind eventually.
I can understand not wanting to be overrun by gringos, but going out occasionally would ease the sporting shortage in Cuenca for me.

I also wish they would let others on the course at least one day a month. I believe the CC is more of a status thing, than a recreation facility. We were told that the place is always deserted during the week, and very few golfers on the weekend. I just cant justify the entry fee as of now. I can take quite a few trips around the country to play golf for what they are asking.

Nor would I pony up that much. I thought I heard there was a nice course being built on the coast.
Make a nice trip down their for a couple nights and some golf, eh? But I think Cuenca Golf and Tennis need another business model: not one based on status but single play $$'s.

Good idea. Go to Ecuador and tell them how they should run the country. Count me in.
Well, maybe not...

Omega, sounds like you want to say something. But apparently you had rather think you are saving a nation from us greedy Gringo's. I said nothing about changing their country. I just stated facts. And I do wish they would change their platform, but that aint gonna happen anytime soon. Nor am I pounding on their door to do so.

Thank you for the fine information. I pay a lot more, I mean a lot more for my country club dues and membership here in the States. Likewise, I was informed that the club will buy back your membership. Are you familiar with that policy?

Nope, I dont think they will buy back any memberships. I was told others had their memberships for sale, but the cost of the transfer fee was almost the same as the initiation fee. They also did not tell us there were temporary memberships available, at about 300 a month. I just cant justify that cost at this point in time. And you will have a hard time finding someone to play with during the week. As it is normally deserted, is what they told us.

Sounds like typical private golf courses here in states... They should have daily greens fees for the public as well as temporary memberships for those who may want to take a look / see approach before handing out $$$$$ for a membership that sounds like it is not transferable...I will be in Cuenca in Jan. 2016 for a month so I will do some research prior to that time. any additional info anyone has would be greatly appreciated on this subject. Thx Mike

I just got back from 4 months in Cuenca and was not allowed to play without a member and they didn't allow a member to continually bring the same guest. The only membership that I am aware of costs $6600 plus tax for a family. Then it is $120/month. I'll be back there in October so if I choose to join at that time you can be my 1st guest!

Leagle, Appreciate the info & invite.. May have to take you up on the offer in the future... Not sure if I will be relocating to Cuenca in 2016 or later ...I am currently working in Myrtle Beach, SC and plan on full retirement within next 24 months...I am not looking for a handout on golf packages and will be willing to pay whatever greens fees may be appropriate...I would love to meet up with other expats and maybe see if we can get together as a group and present a golf package proposal to the golf association that runs the Cuenca golf & Racquet Club that may work for general public and the course itself. I will keep checking forum and I will be in Cuenca in Jan. 2016 for a month... If you want to contact me directly , I can be reached at [email protected]... Thx Mike

In my opinion, only:
Those who are trying to find or make the same situations that you tried to escape from is exceedingly shallow. There are some Gringos who respect and appreciate the culture this wonderful Country has to offer.

Why don't you just build your own golf course and have just what you like. If you offer to pay me $100 a day I might come and play on your course until I get to bored.

I've lucky enough to be coming down to Ecuador for 23 years now. I see lots of posts hear from new gringos wanting to make proposals to Cuenca Golf Administration on how to run the club like a greedy American. Do me and the rest of Cuenca a favor and take your big ideas and shove em up your arses. If you think Cuenca or Ecuador is 'broken' and needs some fixing stay where you are!

I'm not a big golfer, though have some natural talents. (i.e. can drive and putt but NO short2mid game...)
More seriously, why not build a 'rough' 9-hole course - like the original Scotch Corses - except with lots more sand, marshes and Manatee caddies?;! Plenty of land along the Coast and cheap labor and ya can get a Mulligan by claiming a 1.2 tremor influenced your putt...

Thanks, sounds OK. What about 18+ hole venues near the coast - any recommendations?

Hey Chris of Seven..
yeah, seriously man. For 2 or 3 people's yearly 9k, not to mention the 360/mo in dues.. you KNOW a kick ass course could lain out and ran well.
it's not like there is a lack of good land around town, or of good people who could use, and would take take that money. But.. that's another matter, I suppose.
It depends on what a person is looking for. So, for someone like me - I love creaming one down a fairway, cussing the roughs, traps and hazards.. then either sink a green putt, or more likely, chase my damn ball back and forth across it - avoiding the hole at all costs.
That's a great time. But my god I can't stand country clubs.. and that's just me.
I've nothing against them nor their members - I just do not get it. Or maybe I do get it, and therein lies the problem?
anyway, 9k will get you a nice bike :)

I see this is an old post, but I want to make sure anyone considering buying a membership is aware that you must hold it and pay monthly dues for a certain number of years before you can sell it. A year or two ago a gringo was leaving and had someone lined up to sell the membership to. And then he learned about this rule. I donĀ“t recall how many years - maybe 5. But be sure to check it out.

is there a tennis only membership? I'm not into golf. I'm a former instructor and may apply to teach with the pros.
