In 2013 I had severe cataracts on my right eye removed and a lens implant done by the wonderful Cuban doctors who run the Opthalmological Hospital here in Machala. I had the left eye done, last fall. Both surgeries went smoothly and the aftercare/follow up excellent. I believe they operate a similar clinic in Loja. I highly recommend them and it might be worthwhile checking them out. Be aware, these doctors and nurses are Cuban and do not speak English - or speak very little. Also, the procedures have changed since my first operation and usually require a referral from doctor but sometimes, if you've got your cedula, you can get an appointment for an examination and go from there.
Their services are free of charge and designed for retirees and citizens who can't afford ophthalmological surgery. This is not an IESS program. It is a Social Service offered by the Cuban government to the people of Ecuador. While I did not pay for my operations, We did throw one helluva good BBQ on our roof patio for the terrific surgeons, doctors, and nurses, as a thank you.

Hello, do you have the names of these clinics and doctors?
Do you have to declare some kind of poverty situation?
I live in Zumbahua 1 1/2 hours from Latacunga.
What was recuperation like? Thanks for your post.

I had eye surgery here in Guayaquil about 4 months ago. I was so tired of glasses. Without glasses I haven't been able see distances or read anything for many years. I saw an excellent optomologist in the area of Kennedy who replaced the lense in both my eyes. I think the surgery took only about 20 minutes for each eye and wasn't really uncomfortable at all. One eye was done one week and the other the next week and cost about 2,300 per eye. He spoke English as well as Spanish and has a very good bedside manner. I have been very happy with my new eyes;)

I have had cataract surgery performed on both eyes here in Ecuador, over the past six years. Both operations were performed at the Ophthalmological Hospital here in Machala by the excellent Cuban doctors who practice here under an arrangement between Ecuador and Cuba. The first eye was done 6 years ago and required RLE but the other, done a couple of years ago, didn't.
In both cases, the surgery was virtually painless and quick, Recovery time - inclusive of follow up care & checkups took about 3 months - 1) day-after removal of bandages 2) check-up following 3) return 15 days later for check-up 4) two more monthly check-ups. In both cases, my doctors did NOT speak a lot of English, although a couple of them wanted to "practice" with me. My Spanish was good enough to understand all their instructions and explanations without any problems before, during, and after the operations. One caveat, be careful when you go to your hospital. That's where I met my wife. I had gone for an initial consultation and examination and met her.
She's a Trabajadora Social (Social Worker) was working for a mining conglomerate and was there checking on one of the mine workers who had an eye injury. She looked terrific then but even better after I had the RLE !

I was suffering with cataracts in both eyes an both my short and long distance vision have been non existant for years.. I have searched for a good Opthamologists in Ecuador for some time. Most here in Ecuador are not doctors that I would want to trust my vision to. I was directed to Opthomologist Dr Luiz Real by two other very reputable doctors that I know. They said he is the best in Ecuador. His name is Dr. Luis Real and his office is located near Kennedy in Guayaquil. He has studied recently in the US, Spain and Colombia and he really is a top notch, experienced eye doctor. Hes about 35 yoa, speaks English and has an excellent bedside manner. You can find other doctors who can lower the overall cost perhaps by using inferior, lower priced lenses. But Dr. Luis will only work with top of the line lense.
