U.S. State Dept recommends not to travel to Esmeraldas

Hello I'm Bradford,
My Lady friend and I are scheduled to stay in Esmeraldas in late January. We just discovered that the U.S. State Dept. is saying that area is on the "do not travel list" to U.S. Citizens due to recent
violence against local citizens and military. Can anyone comment on whether we should be overly concerned when traveling to that area?
Thank You!

Take if for what it's worth. Our current Secretary of State believes in the "rapture" and plans on fighting holy wars until that actually happens. Everything else out of this regime is geared toward fear of "the other" (not white). So again, take it for what it's worth.

I'm curious why you chose Esmeraldas for a visit? It is close to the jungle lairs of both drug processing and rebel armies. A center for drug and arms smuggling. Muggings and petty theft may be the least of your worries. So, what put this place on your list of places to vacation?

An expat who retired to Bahia de Caraquez, Ecuador enjoys Bahia's very low cost of living, fresh uncontaminated food and warm climate.
