Dissertation research with expats

Hi: I'm a depth psychologist in the final stages of my PhD work, doing in-person doctoral research using depth interviews on the motivations and reasons why an expat, immigrant, or emigre from the U.S., Canada, or Europe moved to Ecuador. As a Jungian psychology student, I am seeking the original, conscious, and more unconscious reasons, with perhaps narratives of dreams, powerful emotions, archetypal images, interesting events, or synchronicities around the time of your original decision making that motivated you to expatriate to Ecuador. I am particularly interested in women and men aged 25-49 who are full-time employed in Ecuador but who self-initiated their own immigration to Ecuador, rather than being sponsored, sent, or assigned to Ecuador by a university, government, or corporation. If you are interested and particularly if you are a dreamer and interested in the less conscious elements of life, please reach out. I'll tell you more about the doctoral research. Interviews will take place between May through July 2019 in Quito, Cotocachi, Cuenca, or Vilcabamba, although other regions may also be right. Warmly, Ceriden

I have been here 5 years and from conversations with many expats, the number of folks 25-49 and making a living and a life in Ecuador is minimal. I could be wrong but I have friends in Quito, Cuenca and Guayaquil and if there are 20 to 30 in the country we would all be surprised. There maybe 5 or 6 in Salinas.

Hi Imbuffn: Great to hear from you, and although minimal (20-30 more or less of expats 25-49) in terms of numbers, I would still be interested in meeting, contacting, or being contacted by expats who want to talk about their original reasons for leaving North America or Europe/UK. What do you think is the best way to reach even these few? Is there another expat type exchange or website that you'd recommend? Warmly, Cerriden

I live in Quito and have met a number of people as you seem to seek. My sense is that they may NOT be very "typical' expats in the sense of those who patronize this or similar websites.

These folks tend to be married to Ecuadorians and to a large extent have assimulated—at least to the point they have full lives here and don't visit expat websites. Others are just passing through for work (as teachers), on work contracts that typically run 2 years.

Although they may associate with other foreigners due to work, they do not do so out of any sense of solidarity. They seem to have a completely different mindset than the Internations.org crowd.

I couldn't imagine how to access such characters as a group, because they aren't.

HI Kimac: Thanks for your reply. I wonder if there are bars and cafes, or coffee shops, that such 25-49 year old expats (as you have very nicely described) visit, enjoy, and meet friends at? Do you know of any bars or cafes in -- Quito? Cotocachi? Cuenca? Vilcabamba? I could put up a flyer or just hang for an hour and two and see who I could meet. I so appreciate your comments. Warmly, Cerriden

Ceriden,

I think you are missing Kimac's point.

While there may be individual expats living and working here between the ages of 25 - 49 years old, they are not A GROUP,

As others have pointed out, this is an almost elusive demogra[phic, since most of the individuals who would fall into this category, are either married to Ecuadorians, or otherwise assimilated through work and family here. Unlike older expats, or students and tourists, this "working group" doesn't "hang out" and are self-sufficient and independent enough that they don't seek out or need gringo compounds expat support groups, web sites, or hangouts. They are too busy working, involved families, and/or socializing with local people.

I would say there are no special bars in Quito that draw such people. Hanging out in bars is not what people here, and especially in your profile, do.

Being at the building stage of life, when your people do go out it will be to the nicer places other Ecuadoreans (for that is what they really are) frequent for business or social purposes. It will be dining for a purpose: business entertaining or someone's birthday. This is not Paris. People order food delivered if they don't want to cook, even the rich. Pizza is very big. You really are talking about Ecuadorean families who just happen to have spouses who are foreigners. What you might observe is an extended family of 6-10, then overhear someone speaking native English. I had that happen not long ago at the one (1) pizza joint open at night on the Cotacachi square. You can find that place easily enough, but you're more likely to run into some older gringo retirees.

Coffee breaks are more the thing in Quito, and you might try the places along Gonzales Suarez or in the La Carolina neighborhood just East of Carolina Park. Sweet & Coffee and Juan Valdez are big coffee shoppe chains to try. In these neighborhoods, maybe one table in 10 would have foreigners, but it is a rather cosmopolitan place: you would be as likely to overhear Korean or French as you would English.

I'd forget Vilcabamba or Cuenca, although there any number of slightly younger drop-outs in Vilca hanging out in the square who'd be happy to con you out of a beer. In Cuenca, just stroll along Calle Larga, or loiter around Parque Calderon, and you'll hear plenty of English. However, those folks will tend to be longer in the tooth.

Hey kevinMoriartiy.... I'm sorry I missed your post.... you summed it up quite nicely!

I will reiterate what I just posted, since I clearly have nothing but time and it is interesting to observe. Although relatively quiet terms of adult distractions, Quito is remarkably cosmo.

There are an awful lot of Ecuadoreans who've returned to Quito after many years, or even full careers, in the US (chiefly NYC) and Europe, There is also a population of kids (???) in their late twenties or thirties who grew up between the US and Ecuador. These folks have a broader perspective and a higher set of expectations than other locals one meets.

But the underlying culture remains, and socializing is far more often in-home....outside of those coffee breaks.
