Howdy everyone, My wife and I will be retiring in about 4 years. So starting to plan on where we want to retire and enjoy a simple, friendly buget, life. We have looked into Mexico and Costa Rico. But now looking more towards Ecuador because of the us dollar and medical system.
We like an easy, laid back style of living. Dont really like big crowded cities. Someplace where the weather is not to hot, and already has some American expats living that we can talk with when we come for a visit.
So what cities would you suggest we research and plan on visiting.
Thanks in advance for your help !
Bill

I just visited both - Vilcabamba and Cuenca - Vilca is a smaller town, Cuenca is larger - the 2 most popular places in Ecuador. I like both places, am going back to spend more time in Vilcabamba.. I am a "newbie" so there is much to learn. Many have their own favorite places. I have not explored the coastal towns yet. It all depends on what you want. No matter what you decide - it will be an adventure in another land - very friendly and most interesting.

Thank you very much peggyjune for the reply. I think we would like the mountain living best, can always take trips to the beaches from time to time. We enjoy nature.
Thanks again Bill

I moved to Ecuador end of December and spent 3 weeks in Quito - even coming from Denver it was too big for me and slightly cooler than Cuenca and higher elevation, Came to Cuenca and love it here. I am moving to coast in July but that’s just so I can experience living by the coast. I’ve visited Otavalo, Cotacachi, and Loja and just not for me but many expats love those cities. When are you planning to come for visit? Kay

Hey Kay ! Thanks for the post and great info. We grew up on ranches and farms, so big city life is just our style. Thinking smaller mountain towns. We can always visit the coast from time to time. We like the easy, laid back living. Would be nice to be around a few gringos. We are planning a July or August trip.

retiring in 4 years? my best advice is learn Spanish, this will serve you wherever you decide to live. I have not met more than 5 people who have limited English language skills.
