House Sitting

My wife and I enjoy seeing new places and have heard some about the possibility of house/pet sitting. I have not looked into this much yet but wonder if some here might have some suggestions for us.

So far from the brief looking I have done many of the listings are for a much longer time period than we can be away from our jobs in the USA.

How would we go about finding a house sitting opportunity that would best fit our time frame?

We would consider doing this in several countries but at this point Panama, Mexico, Colombia and Ecuador are of most interest. Thanks for any tips you can provide!

From what I have seen, your best option is to sign up with several different house/pet sitting services, indicate your preferred parts of the world, and wait to see what opportunities arrive. I've seen sitting opportunities in lengths ranging from 10-14 days up to three or four months.

My knowledge of House Sitting is that it = Pet Sitting.
If you are not prepared to be tied to the home to walk those 3 dogs 3 times a day be careful.

And be prepared to compete with House Sitters who have a positive history on the web site. Hard to break in.

If you still maintain a home or apartment, consider home exchange instead.

If you want to travel out of a suitcase without a basecamp home for a few years - - then House Sitting may be your best option.

We've been using www.homeexchange.com for about 8 years with at least 40 exchanges.
They claim about 67,000 homes worldwide with a membership fee about the same as the House Sitting sites.
We've done about 40 exchanges so far and all of them have been either great or really, really great!
Leaving on Saturday for 3 back-to-back exchanges in Spain.

Since you mention you're interested in house sitting in Mexico, I invite you to check out HouseSitMexico.com. This is my house and pet sitting website serving Mexico exclusively. See the How It Works section (housesitmexico.com/start-here) and see the available assignments. In less than 3 years, HouseSitMexico has successfully filled over 380 house sits! I firmly believe house sitting for "someone who made the transition before you", is the very best way to figure out where you'd like to settle. Questions and comments are welcome. :) Alex
