If we buy...

We plan to rent for at least one year before we decide anything to get our feet under us, however, the more we roam the streets using google street view, the more we think we do NOT want to be in the city. It seems very claustrophobic with the buildings all connected to each other; wall to wall.

As we venture out into the country, we see more green spaces and more room to breathe. Sure, we would need a car, but I dont care about that. I've driven in multiple foreign cultures before.

Does anyone have experience buying land and building, or buying one of the newer homes we see on the outskirts of town? Dirt roads, no problem. 20-30 minutes into town, no problem. I would like to hear from expats who have ventured into the countryside for their peace and space. Was it the right move for you? Why, why not?

Anyone?

A big downside to your plan is the cost of new and used cars in Ecuador.
Even though they've come down a bit in the last year, a quality vehicle is riduclously expensive compared to the USA and gas prices have also risen significantly lately.
Plus - Vehicles here that have anything close to the safety features of those in the USA are even more expensive.
Don't be surprised to see most brand new vehicles with only two airbags - (No side or side-curtain airbags)
No thanks for me.

Thanks Kmarch. I appreciate that, I dont mind spending money on a vehicle and it would just be a go-to-towner.

Do you have any experience in the rural real estate situation in Cuenca? We have been trying to find info about West of town, but google street view is limited.

We have booked a 1-week trip there in January and will do a deep dive into the surrounding areas.

Thank you so much for taking the time.

filmsmurf,

PM (Private Message) me or email me at kmoriarty28@gmail.com and I will be happy to relate my experiences with purchasing land and building in the country. We have a home in the city which we expanded, and also have a small casa de campo we built on land purchased out of town.

Just one thing: security can be more of a challenge in a rural setting.
