Visiting Ecuador with intent to Expat!

Hello all!

My wife and I are visiting Ecuador this October with the intent of scouting around for becoming expats. We are visiting Guayaquil, Salinas, Cuenca, and Quito, with a couple stops along the way.

To introduce ourselves, I am 34, and my wife is 27. I am a safety professional with a background in electronics, and she is in sales with degrees in business and history. I am also a veteran of the armed forces, and plan to expat on my compensation/pension. We are very outdoorsy people. My wife likes to run, I mountain bike, and and learning fly fishing. We both love hiking, camping, and backpacking. We currently live at 7000 ft in New Mexico, US, and are leaning towards the high Andes.

Mostly our goals are to live somewhere that is more affordable and is outside the US. Some of this has to do with the desire to have kids where were don't have to pay a years salary even with insurance, nor a lifetime's salary to send them to school. We are unsure if we will work once we get there, as my pension is enough to live on.

We have been able to save up some money, and hope to purchase a house with a little land outside one of the major cities (leaning towards between Cuenca and Santa Isabel).

So far we have definitely not been onsite, so not pulling the trigger on the move yet, but everything we have researched Ecuador looks like the place for us!

I am sure I will have more questions later on in the process, but really just wanted to say hi. If you have any general advice (or specific) please feel free to comment!
