From Manta going south along the coast anywhere and Cuenca are my initial thoughts of places to check out. Any suggestions? Probably going to home base around Guayaquil for a month and take some overnight trips unless I could get weekly rentals at different areas reasonably. Could easily extend the month to longer. Thanks

Home base in Guayaquil for a month!
Maybe longer!

Have you been to the Big G?
Hot, humid, recently ranked among
the world's top-50 murder capitals!

Think about staying in those coastal
places for, say, at least
three nights per ..
before moving onward with
all deliberate speed.

We just got back from ruta del sol or also called ruta de spondylus, google it. Follows the highway along the coast from north in Esmeraldas to south in Salinas. We visited a big bunch of beaches and had no problems finding lodging in any of them without pre-planning, just show up and look around. Recommend you take your stuff with you and go instead of staying in Guayaquil. Most towns will have some sort of laundry option if you run low on clothes. Most hotels on coast have a/c unit for each room. SUN BLOCKER AND HAT REQUIRED, long sleeve swim shirt also highly recommended. If you are not familiar with Ecuador, the sun is very strong here. We moved here from Houston and it is a very obviously stronger than beaches in Texas and Mexico. Bring sun block with you, recent purchase of tube of Neutrogena was $22 here. We wore flip flops almost everywhere....

Note that the a la carte seafood menu is very expensive ($7 to $21), surprisingly so when you are right where the fisherman sell directly on the beach and seems to be nearly the same in every town, go instead for the daily "almuerzo", choice of soup followed by choice of seconds (segundos) like fish with rice and salad about $3-4. Usually plenty of food and because it is the coast, usually seafood anyway.

Please also note that end of September is low season for beaches except for holidays. Bargain for a lower price on rooms. We paid $25-30 per night still high season. Hotel hint....do NOT pay until you see the room. Prices vary all over the place and there are no hotel chains, so can get a nice room for cheaper sometimes than a more expensive room, just keep looking. We rarely looked at more than 2 hotels. Hostels are not what we think of in USA, can be just a hotel with bathroom in room also. Look at rooms before committing!!!!

Note that motels are not hotels, typically for couples looking for intimate privacy.....

We had an option at one hotel of a room on third floor with a terrace outside with tables and chairs, ocean view, very private feeling. Or a second floor room, same view with a larger terrace with hammocks and loungers! Another hotel, went to see the room, did not tell us in advance but was 4th floor all stairs and skinny stairs like attic access stairs....That was a firm NO.

If you do not like tepid showers, typical for beach hotels, ask about hot water. Some have it, some don't.
