I Wish I had Known... Before Moving to Egypt

If there was one thing that you wish you had known about living in Egypt before you arrived and started to settle in, what would it be?

There are just too many things... I wish I had known that the general population is very dishonest and deals with the harshness of daily living by lying, cheating, and stealing from anyone and everyone...I wish I had known how men, married or not, are always lying about love in an attempt to get money or citizenship, how they use women because they have no respect for women.... I wish I had known how filthy the streets are and how pushy and self-important the people are... I wish I had known how little concern for human life there is here, especially for women and children... I wish I had known that education was a joke here.. I wouldn't have bothered to waste my time trying to teach.. I wish I had known how dishonest businesses here are.. I wish I would have known that no matter how sincere people appear... there is very little honesty in Egyptian society...I wish I would have known how little there is for women to do here besides eat and watch DRAMA shows..in Arabic....I wish I would have known how much Egyptians, especially the women, hate foreigners and make them suffer so much for trying to live in their country... I wish I would have known how impossible it is to walk around without damaging your legs, knees, and feet due to huge holes, garbage, and erratic drivers... I wish I would have known the emotional suffering that was waiting for me at having to fight for every breath I take when I leave the flat... oh, yes, there are just too many things I wish I had known...I would have chosen a different place to teach English. These people don't want education or to actually learn English.. they just want to pretend they know English enough to deceive foreigners. They would much rather pay language centers to have Egyptian teachers teach them incorrectly than to pay a foreigner.. and then there are all the games they play about their lessons.. the hospital visits, the dead relative, the wedding they have to go to, the new baby in the family, the dentist, the hairdresser visit.. the list of stupid excuses is endless! I am only too happy to be going back home... where I speak the language, know the rules, and have the same rights as everyone else and pay the same price as everyone else. It will be a VERY long time until Egypt will be right again. This society accepts every excuse in the book for people being uncivilized and dishonest.. it has a very long way to go before it will be like it was at the top of civilization before the colonialization took place. I hope they soon find their way.

Wow!!Sorry about your horrible experience in Egypt.
I am not Egyptian and i visited Alexandria and Cairo 3 times and i have to say that i enjoyed the first time but not so much the other two.
It is very different and people are too.
I was thinking to move to Egypt but after reading your post...I think i will stay in London:)
Thanks.

I lived in Cairo for 4 months in 2009 and then again for a few at the end of 2010 into 2011. The Egypt you describe is definitely not the Egypt I got to know and love. The people you so dislike is for sure not the ones I got to know and respect. I went there with an open mind and open heart and I was accepted the same way. The women I met respected me exactly the way I did them and still do them. Maybe the fault can be find within yourself, but instead you seek the blame for your unhappiness within the people of Egypt. I am currently trying hard to get myself back to Egypt...this time never to leave again. I had only good experiences in that most wonderful country and will not change it for the wrold.
