Quick visit via Santa Ana and Alegria

My family and I (with our Costa Rica registered car) are doing a quick road trip ~10days. We are situated in northern Nica but plan on a quick tour to Antigua Guatemala via Copán Honduras, then onwards through El Salvador, including a night in Santa Ana and a night in Alegria, then back to Nica. A few questions, any feedback appreciated:
- We will generally follow Google Maps unless recommended otherwise. This includes entry to El Salvador along route CA8, and exit at El Amarilla (CA1). Any issues we should be aware of at those borders or should we strive to take other border crossings with a route change?
- we plan on spending one afternoon checking out ruins near Santa Ana, and one afternoon checking out the lagoon in Alegria. If we could add another day, what would people suggest to see or do?
- between Santa Ana and Alegria, is there a recommended route? Google suggests using a variance to Route1 by going on Sal38w and Autopista Este Orestes. This goes north of San Salvador. Knowing little about safety issues here, are we better off staying further north, say on Caratera Suchitoto? We will drive in the morning.
Thanks in advance for any info!!

How did your trip through El Salvador last year go? Did the route that you were planning work out?

Regards,

Our route did change a bit due to border delays and running out of time. We spent only one night in El Salvador and that was in Santa Ana late in the evening due to delays on the Guatemalan side of the border. We then drove to Alegria early the next day, hiked into the volcano, then kept driving to the next border, and spent the night in Goascoran, Honduras.
I believe we took (from north to south) CA-8, 1, RN-18E (at San Miguel), 1 to the border. No issues with that route whatsoever.
