Hi!

I'm and American and have lived here in Estonia for the past 16 years. One of the things that still amazes me is that small children, coming home from school, ride the buses and walk home alone. I feel perfectly safe and even though I don't have children I know my friends feel that their children are safe. I'm sure it depends on which part of town that you live, and I wouldn't be careless with my children, but I think you can rest in knowing that your children are probably safer than they would be in America, or England.

I speak Estonian although not perfectly, as I am not surrounded with Estonians all the time. I work from home. I do speak with my secretary daily, who does not speak English at all. I'm sure that if you are immersed in the language you will pick up what you need in no time at all. Estonians love it if you just try. As there are a small number of people in the world that speak Estonian, they are very proud of their language and proud that a foreigner would try and learn it.

I can't give a report on the schools as I don't have children, but what I've heard is that they are good. Some are better than others. Maybe someone else can help you on that point.

Good luck in your move to Tallinn! I think you will love it here!

B.

Hi, I'm also british and moved here last May with my Estonian wife and our son, who is now 14 months old. I have had a bit of culture shock but I havent lived in the UK much as I have lived most of my life in Cyprus. I have found the people I have met to be friendly and helpfull. Yes it is safe but still remember that it is a city and things can happen wherever you are. As to the schools, its like anywhere you have to pick and choose to find the right one. I have managed to pick up quite a bit of the language and as my inlaws speak no english it is good practice for me. Get your husband to look in to the child benefit situation because for the first 18 months of your childs life you can receive at least 2000eek per month. That really helps during the time you are finding work. Hope this has helped somewhat. If you have any other questions send me a mail.
