Quasi-Retirement

I'd like to be a writer in retirement. I know there are different types of visas, but I'm not sure what writing would fall under. It's not as if I'm taking a job away from an EU resident.

Thanks,

Derek

If you are planning on getting the retirement visa you will have to sign an attestation that you will not undertake any business or professional activity in France. They can be very picky and I would strongly advise you not to mention it on your application. If anyone asks what you plan to do in France, say something about wine or equally leisurely. I haven’t been here (Nice) that long but have already noticed a certain “don’t tell me that” attitude. As long as you tick the right boxes and say the right things and thus satisfy the bureaucracy, the rest is your business!

If you intend to make money writing, then I would expect either "talent" visa or "liberal or independent profession". The tricky part is that you will need to show that it will generate at least the minimum wage, about 1330 euros currently net.

At this point, your writing sounds like it would be a hobby or pass-time to do in your retirement, with no guarantee of earning any money in France from writing. Personally, I wouldn’t say anything about your plans in your visa application.
Good luck!
