Lake Atitlan medical care for US citz.

Hello,
I have been considering moving to Lake Atitlan for the past 3 years. Getting more serious now that I have the opportunity to make the move but would like to know more about health care for expats (medical and specialized fields such as dental, chiropractic, etc.)

For those who have already made the move....how do you manage your health care and what available options are there for medical needs? I am not speaking of health insurance only but for options for doctors. I understand that there are some clinics around the lake but not hospital care (and would that be more for the locals than expats?).

Thank you,

Hi - There are some really excellent doctors, clinics and hospitals, many better equipped than even the USA!! This link is your best starting point: http://guatemalamedicaltravel.com/
If you scroll down home page you will find directories for specific things.
All doctors here are highly qualified, usually in US, Germany, Spain and other countries and speak fluent English as well.
As I understand, as not from the US, attention is much cheaper than in the US too!
Good Luck with your move. I believe you won't regret it!

My wife and I have lived in Guatemala for 7 years. For most things Healthcare is excellent in Guatemala, costs a lot less than the US and in general, I prefer being treated in Guatemala versus the USA. The key thing is if the treatment or procedure is something the doctor has done 100's or 1000's of times then I prefer getting treated in Guatemala. Most things that come up even major operations are just as good to be done in Guatemala and are available. If you have a unique set of circumstances / complications or require a new procedure than I recommend going to the States for that. Other than for basic stuff like a cold or flu you will need to go Guatemala City. There are other similar medical buildings with independent doctor's offices but I recommend going to Multimedica on Vista Hermosa in Zone 15 in Guatemala City ( http://www.hospitalmultimedica.com/en/main.php ). There website is available in English and there is a directory of doctors on their website. There is an emergency room there and a place to have tests done (Techniscan), Techniscan will have test results ready the same day or the next day in most cases and deliver the results to your doctor.
