Cellphones for the lake area

My phone needs replacing/upgrading and since I plan to live in the Lake Atitlan area for several months I thought I would get an unlocked phone that is best suited for that area.

There are LTE (faster) phones and then there are phones that simply use wi-fi systems. Is LTE common/accessible around the Lake or should I save a few $ and get one that is not LTE capable?

Is there anything else that I should look for in my new smartphone (or will not need - so don't pay more for it) with regards to being able to use it by changing out the "chip" when I get there?
Many thanks,

Tigo and Claro are most widely used for cell phone service. Tigo is known to have better coverage in remote areas. I use Claro and find the cell coverage better than in the USA and rarely encounter a dead spot. Claro also offers packages for cell, cable, internet and landline. I am not sure if Tigo offers the same type packages. I think Claro and Tigo don't charge for calls to other users of their service. So the service used by the people that you plan to speak to the most my be the best determinate of which provider you go with. My wife and live in San Lucas Sacatepequez 15 minutes from Antigua and Claro has started to put Fiber Optic Cable in for TV, internet and landline service in our sub division.
