Working Remotely in Panajachel

Hello,

My husband and I are considering relocating our family to Panajachel in the summer of 2021. We plan to have a test run of things this December 2020 if things with the pandemic allow for it. We visited before 2 years ago, but this time would like to be more in the live here mode rather than tourist mode.

My question to you all is if there are any restrictions or obstacles one might face with working remotely for a US company while physically living abroad?

Also, how do most people address the issue of visas? Do most just stay on the tourist visas and then just drive to the borders and reenter every 90 days? Does anyone ever encounter any obstacles with that approach?

Thanks for your replies!

Hi
How great you are considering relocating to this amazing part of the world and Guatemala.
My first suggestion is to check out this website as these questions have been answered many times and also the Facebook community pages of: Expats in Guatemala and Panajachel Community. Both have heaps of useful information.
Main things to consider if working on line is the internet connection. Many people work on line, now more than ever of course! A good internet connection should be your first question when considering a rental. Remember the max here is 10 upload and around 1-2 download.
People 'live' here for decades in a tourist visa! So yes, v easy to do and many can give u there experiences. You do have to leave the country every 6 months w a renewal every 3 months. Pretty simple.
Happy to help you nearer the time w a rental.
Buena Suerte
Best
Francesca

Thanks for your reply! My husband and I don't have social media accounts, but the pages you mentioned sound helpful so we may consider getting one!

Are you able to tell if the Covid-19 has made Guatemala unsuitable for travel after the boarders reopen? Or are things pretty much the same as they were before Covid-19? Has safety changed at all? Thanks!
