Hi there. Has anyone driven a car to Guatemala and kept it there long term? Does anyone know what permissions I need to get and what are the costs involved? I only seem to be able to get information on a temporary permit for a car.

I have done it 4 times. the last was 12 years ago so my info is getting a little dated. At this point I would not do it again the customs process is kind of a nightmare and crossing Mexico is no joke.

Legalization begins at the border with SAT and Aduanas and the process and regulations were a little different each time. I'd start here:

Bringing a vehicle long term, >90 days is pretty simple, go and pay the import taxes on the vehicle and nationalize it, that is in fact the only way for long term. The other option is to go to Mexico for a couple days and get a fresh 90 day permission. I have heard that the first time you need a fresh 90 days you can get it done in the city at Aduana. FYI, the fines for going over the 90 day limit can be costly.
