What has been your greatest challenge?
Have you had any issues with crime?
How long have you lived there, why did you choose Honduras- what area do you live in?

Lainie, I'm a 56 yo single retired man from Florida. I moved to the island of Roatan 18 months ago. I choose Roatan because after doing research on International Living (website & magazine) Roatan was always listed as one of the best places in the Caribbean to retire. It is not as well known as some other places like Belize / Cozumel / Cancun so not yet as fully developed. However housing costs have increased as the popularity has grown. In gated communities a single bedroom condo can start at $500k plus HOA fees. I enjoy living here but I moved here before cruise ships were arriving due to COVID & I have noticed an uptick in traffic now that cruise ships are back. Wednesdays are the busiest day with 5 or 6 ships. Tourist buses are going to/from the beaches to the ports (there are 2 ports - one public and a private port just for Carnival). I enjoy SCUBA, snorkeling, beach, & yoga. They now have a pickleball group but I haven't had time to join up yet. I feel very safe here. Most islanders speak English & Spanish so you don't have to learn Spanish to get by. Some people who moved here from the mainland only speak Spanish but they work typically as cab drivers or in small shops. All the larger businesses have English speaking employees. I have been living in a rental one-bedroom for $450/month 1 mile from West End beach. I'm in the process of building a small one bedroom (670 sq ft) home closer to the beach that should be completed by June. I recommend you rent first & explore to find out what part of the island best suites your living style. The most frustrating issues are banking & getting a drivers license. You often have to wait awhile to speak with a bank manager to open an account or withdraw money. They have ATMs but even if you use your own bank ATM they charge close to $1 per transaction - not a huge financial burden. All large retailers accept bank debit cards without any fees. Some American restaurants only accept cash or Paypal. I've attached a picture of my house under construction. It is not in a gated community but West End has water & sewer connections. I am installing a whole house water purification system ($1500) because the water quality is not to the standards of the US.

Don't come here on the realization that it is like living in a first world country because it is far from it. I moved to Roatan last May and I am now currently listing my house and moving to a gated community in Rio Estaban 45 minutes away from La Ceiba. The community there is all expats and safe. Roatan's crime is getting out of hand. Robberies are common place now, and there have been a few murders... Not to deter you, but I am not used to this and I no longer feel safe here. So I am going somewhere , where I don't have to be worried about getting robbed when I go outside. Roatan is thriving with restaurants and there are a couple of nice beaches. West End and West Bay are the hot spots. I live in Sandy Bay. where there resides a resident thief whom the police seem to do nothing about. I am tired of having things disappear which were outside of my property. For piece of mind, I am going to buy in the beautiful gated community which has probably the nicest beaches I have seen anywhere. If you want more info, feel free to contact me. Bev
