Hello, my American husband and I are moving back home in the summer of 2015. My husband is retired from the US Army and we have Tricare Prime medical insurance. Has anybody used Tricare in Ireland? If so can you please tell me how it worked out for you? Also does anybody know if there are clubs/groups for retired US Military in Ireland?

DanCat, Try the following link for Tricare. It took me a while to find the correct plan for retirees and their dependents, so if this isn't what you are looking for, please let me know and I'll go through my saved links more thoroughly. If memory serves correct, through this link, you can look for physicians accepting Tricare. http://www.tricare.mil/Plans/HealthPlans/TSO.aspx Hope this helps.

DanCat, Should your husband (unfortunately) have a VA rated service connected medical disability, the VA has a foreign medical program (FMP) which provides services to qualified veterans residing overseas or traveling abroad. Not overly promoted, but helpful, nonetheless. We haven't used this service, but will in the future, should we move or travel extensively overseas. My husband is also military retired (20 years), but 100% service related disabled. http://www.va.gov/PURCHASEDCARE/programs/veterans/fmp/index.asp
We haven't looked very close into this program, but have read where vets have medications and medical supplies sent to them overseas.

Hi DanCat I hope your move went well. We will likely be in the same position in a few years. I’d appreciate hearing how Tricare usage is going for you in Ireland. Do you have to pay upfront for everything and submit your bills back to tricare in the USA? Do they reimburse you 100% once the cat/cap and deductibles are satisfied? I hope you didn’t have to go to hospital but if you did, did you sign the form to be admitted as a private insurance patient or “go public”? I’ve been reading about a lot of confusion and difficulty with this in the newspapers recently.
Last question... did you explore buying VHI or BUPA or other Irish private insurance if tricare isn’t enough in Ireland and how do they interact?
Thanks so much

I would like to know the answer to this as well. We are currently living in Costa Rica but considering a move. The way it works now is if we use a provider that does not accept Tricare (there is only 1 in the country), we pay up front and submit to Tricare Overseas. Serveral months (usually about 6) we get reimbursed. The same provider also accepts VA. That is considerably easier to use.

I resided in Costa Rica from 04-08 and used FMP. Paid 25% while the rest of the paperwork was taken care of by organization run by expats.
