PPS number

Hello - I'm dual British/Irish, got both passports. Want to retire to Ireland, but want to rent a base to look around for suitable house. My problem is, though I am Irish citizen, don't live there - can't rent without PPS number, and it seems they won't give you that until you are resident. Catch-22 situation. I'm flying over next week, with my Irish passport, and have an appointment to get a PPS number - does anyone know, if this is an automatic right to be given one being a non-resident, yet Irish? You can't seem to rent anywhere without a PPS, so do you see my predicatament? Any advice gratefully received. Thanks!

We are dual British/Australian citizens and relocated to Ireland Feb 2015. Prior to departing Australia we completed applications for PPS numbers; completed what information we could, provided whatever evidence of identity was required and (despite what some others in this forum will say) we had no problem being issued wirh PPS Nos in 2014 while still in Australia. We returned to Australia June 2016.

Hi RRRetiree-We just went through this in West Cork two years ago. We are dual citizens and in order to avoid extra charges on our shipping, we had to provide a PPS number to fill out the Customs forms properly before they would release our container. What a dilemma! We had just arrived and didn't have a clue what to do, The social services office wouldn't even let us fill out an application until we came up with a reason they considered valid--our Customs issue was not sufficient. Since we are of an age that we are eligible for free travel, so I filled out both the PPS and Free Travel eligibility application forms. That was OK with them. The PPS card came in about a week. Saying you are going to need it to apply for a Driving Permit Theory Test is another valid reason. You can book an appointment online. Here's another link which shows what documentation you will need: https://psc.gov.ie/how-to-apply/

You will need an address here in Ireland to get the PPS card, but if you can show a signed lease or a notarized statement of confirmation of intention to lease to the PPS office, and show a copy of your PPS application to the landlord, you may be able to wrangle the paperwork. Good luck, it should all work out for you, if you persist.

You may want to review the information on this website: http://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Personal-Public-Service-Number-How-to-Apply.aspx
There is also a list of who can request your PPS Number which you may want to review. Good luck!
