Hello everyone!
We are a group of four students working on a project at Trinity College of Dublin, entrusted by the Irish Government to find out areas of improvement regarding the whole process of becoming an Irish Citizen.
We have created an online questionnaire for you to fill out so we can learn from your experience and find more relevant solutions.
Your feedback would be highly appreciated and useful to our research :) Your answers are solely intended to be used in the frame of our project and will not be shared with any external party.
Thanks in advance for your help!
Here is the link to the questionnaire: https://forms.gle/StkHzmRto7xw5P7k7

Are you only interested in citizenship issues? There are lots of issues with other categories of residency including Stamp 0 which has been a thorn in the side of many applicants due to rule changes and political issues. You can PM if preferred.

I went through the process, received my citizenship and passport but have not yet moved to Ireland. Your survey requires the respondent be living in Ireland. You might have a branch off the survey at that point.

I agree! I started to do the survey but I stopped when it asked where you live in Ireland. I got my citizenship a few years ago, but I live in the US!

Maraith Are you going to move to Ireland when current difficulty eases?

I am just curious why people take out citizenship. I wish those students would try to find out. The Irish naturalization process is unusual in that it demands no evidence of knowledge of any aspect of Ireland or either of its two official languages.
May I ask have you ever lived in Ireland?

dbarnwell, If I can chime in, I think for many people, it's less about citizenship and more about permanent residency and flexibility in their options. I spent a few years working in immigration and the :dream" of citizenship to many is far less a motivation than to the simple desire to improve their lives, either financially or spiritually. Permanent residency like a green card or golden visa, provides all that msany people need.

Yes. We are in a temporary house until spring when we hope the virus is under control. At that point we will move to Ireland, God willing.

Dbarnwell No I have not lived there, just visited. My grandmother was from Boyle, Roscommon and my great grandfathers were all form Westport, Mayo. I have always had a strong desire to spend more time there. Getting my citizenship and passport allows me to do that. I feel connected and since my grandmother was never able to return home, I like to think she’d be happy to see me there!

I have often thought that if the Irish followed the US example, and demanded that citizens wherever they may be must file and if appropriate, pay taxes, that there would be a sharp fall in interest in Irish citizenship. Even a filing requirement would be enough to give second thoughts. The IRS rules for citizen abroad filings are so hard to understand, and you will find no US tax preparation advisors in Ireland. I am just now doing my 2019 federal taxes !

Do you mean there are no annual income. taxes in Ireland?

Are you looking for those who are citizens by descent, naturalisation or both?

Maraith Of course there are. And you do realize you will still have to file a federal return every year, maybe even pay if you don't calculate it right. It drives me crazy every year.

dbarnwell - You've really gone off topic - perhaps start another thread if you wish to discuss FATCA.

Muddled What is FATCA?
And are you in charge here? Who appointed you? If so I won't post again.
I more regularly post on the Colombia thread, where there is very good free discussion. It's pleasant. Quite extraordinary that you censor the input of a dual citizen living in Ireland with regard to foreign citizens seeking Irish naturalization.
Do you really think you know more about Ireland than I do? You don't.
If you can confirm that you have taken it on yourself to control the discussion here then I won't bother offering any further advice to readers. It's their loss, not mine. Shame on you.
