Freelancing in Italy

Post New Topic

Hi,

I am considering relocating to Italy as a freelance.

The taxes in Italy are incredibly high!

My question is, is it allowed to deduct rent and other utility bills for a freelancer working 100% of his time from home?

Thanks

Hi, SectionOne,

Are you a citizen of Italy or another EU country? If not, you will not be able to obtain a visa that will enable you to work in Italy as a freelance. The only way you would be able to work there is by getting a job with an Italian company that would obtain a visa for you. The types of visas available are listed at https://consnewyork.esteri.it/consolato_newyork/en/i_servizi/per_chi_si_reca_in_italia/visas-to-enter.html.

I am not a citizen of Italy or EU, but after speaking with the embassy and with Italian authorities, my immigration lawyer is able to get me "visto di lavoro autonomo".

So now I am trying to decide if I want it...

That's interesting. When I looked into it, I was told it was nearly impossible to obtain (I am a freelance book editor and could not get a letter of guaranteed employment from my clients). You might be best off contacting an international accounting firm that specializes in expats for the answers to your tax questions. Good luck!

That's excellent, so you have a good chance! The reason I suggested contacting an accounting firm is that most of the people on this forum have or are trying to get the elective residency visa, which precludes employment, so you might have better luck trying that.

Thanks SectionOne. Your blog has great information. I’m self employed in the U.S. Do you know how to find out the income requirements for professionals?
