Hi all, I'm considering a move to Italy, in the next year, or so. At 1st, for 3-6 months, then permanently if all goes like I hope it will! I haven't narrowed down an area yet & would like to hear opinions. to help with that. Italy is such a beautiful country that I'm having a hard time! I love to stand up paddleboard, so I'm looking for a town or city that is close enough to a sea/ocean for me to go paddleboard every morning & other times during the day, but Iove a good morning SUP to start the day. For the most parts, I'd like the water to be calm. I don't mind some small waves, but dont want anything too big. I don't mind wind, but the less wind the better. I would also like to be in warmer weather the majority of the year, but realize that may not be completely doable. If there's a good expat area, that would be nice, but not as important as the water & weather conditions. I appreciate any suggestions.

Hi! I am a little puzzled by your query given that there are no oceans bordering Italy. I think you will just have to go look around at various places to determine the wave heights, or else there are online sources that monitor them.
As far as moving there is concerned, are you a citizen of an EU country or a descendent of an italian parent or grandparent? If not, you will be subject to the Schengen Area regulation, which states that you may remain in the Schengen Area 90 days out of every 180. You can also apply for an elective residence visa, which requires approximately 31,000 euros of fixed income, without working, per year. There are many threads on this forum that deal with this subject. Good luck!

Hey supgirlonthemove If the water is a prime motive- Sardinia may be the place for you. Check out Alghero. The town is in a bay and within short a short drive you can go from the windward to leeward side depending on wind direction == thus calm water can be found at any time for SUP. There are small villages on the water nearby. Like the rest of Italy, the food and wine are excellent and the people very inviting. Not many expats. I live nearby so PM me if you want more info.

Thank you Almare2. I know there are not oceans bordering Italy, which is why I put "Sea" in the topic title, as well.. Ive heard some ppl calling them oceans at times. I was just trying to get more attention to the post. I hope "oceans" doesn't deter ppl to post. I'm hoping to get folks that live in the seas area's, as well as lakes, to be more than glad to give me their opinions. If not, I will be coming next year for some time to check out places as much as possible. But, if I do get responses about certain areas, I can add them on my list as a place to visit, or not waste my time going to.
I've been doing major research for coming to Italy for a few months at a time, as well as, complete retire forever. I've seen some of the posts regarding the needs to live in Italy & plan to read more after looking for an area that interest me. Thank you for your information. I appreciate your post.

Thank you Almare2. Yes, I know there aren't any oceans, just seas, but at times I've heard others mention ocean so i wanted to get everyone's attention that can help me. I want to open my post to as many ppl as possible, to send me information that may help me now or down the road. I hope "ocean" doesn't deter anyone from posting. I'd like to get as much information as possible so I can add to my list or delete something! Maybe I should have listed Lake in there vs ocean. I prefer the seas, but if there's a great place on a lake that I can SUP on, that would be something to consider, as well, Thank you for all of your information. I will use it as I go.

I would look at Formia Caposele area in the Gulf of Gaeta lots of US Navy and expats in the area. Further south Monopoli has a good rowing community but I dont know about expats.

Thank you Minturnopat! I'm not familiar with the area. I'll check it out. Are you in Minturno? It looks & sounds like a nice area. Looks good for surfing, even tho I'm not doing that anymore. How long have you been there, if that's where you live & how do you like it? Thank you again for the help & your time.
