Residency Visa in the age of COVID?

New Topic Newest First

Hi all:

The situation is kind of new. But, I'm hoping others looking to move to Italy might have insights. Thank you in advance for your help.

My wife and I began the process of getting our elective residency visas, gathering the documents, scheduling the appointment. Then the EU shut down non-essential travel from the U.S. I believe returning residents are allowed in (an American friend who lives in Venice recently made back to spend his two weeks locked up).

I haven't been able to get response from my consulate or the group in the embassy dealing with COVID questions: Are they even taking applications for elective residency visas? And, if we were lucky enough to get one, would we be let in. Any chance anyone knows anything about this?

Thanks again!

We were in the same situation pre-Covid and received an email from the Miami consulate that they were canceling all appointments till further notice! From what I’ve been told speaking to others I do not expect this situation to change until the first of the year assuming things begin to get back to normal, whatever normal is today!

Ugh. That is so sad. My wife finally agreed to make the move. We got our documents together. And now, I guess we are back on hold.

UGH. That is so sad. My wife and I finally agreed on a plan. We had the appt. Now we are in limbo.

Oh well. That's better than not knowing.

Where were you planning on moving to?

Thanks much. And good luck with all this.

I feel your frustration? This move was to have taken place two years ago but then a sibling of mine got very ill and we postponed our move to be near him for his year-long struggle...and then this covid came along. That's life ! We initially were going to move to Agropoli in the Cilento. My family is from there. So many of the initial requirements that one must do upon arrival would be made a 'bit' easier by having my relative assist us in getting settled. As for a more permanent base, who knows, we might stay there or move elsewhere as we discover more places. We like Liguria around Moneglia and Lucca, but in the end we realize a lot of how things happen in Italy is by knowing the right people and thus Agropoli, which is a very pretty seaside resort. How about you and your wife? Where were you going to go?

Dear Foxwhite, Do give Liguria a think. We love it and the weather is much cooler than way down south. But thankfully still no snow! We are inland from the 5Terre in the hills and it's very convenient to the bigger towns for shopping etc and the hospitals are very modern (Rapallo is new and rivals anything in Boston).
My cousin lives just outside Lucca and loves it, lots of english speaking..more so than here.
Another cousin lives part time in Framura...it is a dream town...there are many tiny coastal towns that are not too overridden with tourists.
Good Luck...it will be worth the wait no matter where you settle.
