Codice Fiscale

Hello,
I am in Italy right now on a month long visit. I wanted to apply for Codice Fiscale while I am here, but
I was told that In order to obtain Codice Fiscsale while in Italy, US citizens need to have a Schengen visa in their passports.
Otherwise, I would need to apply for Codice Fiscale at Los Angeles consultate, when I return home from Italy. Does anyone have an experience with obtaining Codice Fiscale? Thank you.

I walked into the local tax office, Agenzia della Entreat and just got it by asking for it. One my passport was needed for identification purposes. I believe you now need to make an appointment but that is easily done often on line depending where you are.

Ciao, I'm in Italy now too. I obtained mine from the Italian consulate before I got here. It was easy and took less than a week. I'm assuming they did not give you a visa when you arrived. I didn't get one either, they said we didn't need it which I thought was strange. Of course your stamp is the start of your 90 day visa, maybe they'd accept that? If you don't need it while you're here, it might be easier to get it from the consulate than navigate what you may have to do while you're here.

Hello Gary92130, I got my codice fiscale last year while on a 3 month house hunting trip with a regular tourist visa. Nothing was asked of me but my passport. Hope this helps.

Now things may have changed what with Covid rules and Bureaucracy in general but my daughter got her Codice Fiscale (she's US) at the Agenzia della Entrate. There is at least one if not more in every region (Liguria I know of Chiavari and LaSpezia and there must be one in Genova). Yes, there is standing in line, passport in hand but took only minutes once she was seen. No Schengen Visa required. Warning: to married US women...have it made out in your Passport Name...if they refuse and you eventually want a driver's license you will need to return and have it changed. Stress it must match your Passport. Most Italian women use their maiden name and that would be on their passport. 2nd Warning: Do not fall for on-line quicky service...either go to the nearest Entrate or do it when you get home and can go to your consulate. 3rd Warning: Info from other US Ex-pats on this site...it seems there might be a horrendously long wait to get to the Italian consulate in your state. So, yes...apply while you are here in Italy.

Yes. I was able to get it online from LA consulate’s website. Very easy. Took about a week
