Need to pick some brains !!

I'm contemplating moving to Jamaica, most likely Montego Bay or Kingston...

I am employed, and cover the entire Caribbean for work, so all I really need is a safe place, with security, 24 hr electricity, hot water and North American comforts ....

I've lived in Juan Dolio DR for 3 years so I have a decent feel for the lifestyle in the Caribbean, am honestly tired of the DR experience, time for a new Island and definitely some English !! hahahha

I am single - no children so I'm by default "portable" ... I would appreciate any info. an expat wishes to offer !!! I've been to Jamaica, but it has been a while - in fact I'm on Island next week in Kingston ...

No interest in buying property, would rent for 3 months and determine where i would sign a lease for a year ....

Thank you for any input you may have !!!

Welcome!!! Since you're single and it sounds like you'll be traveling some than Kingston is most likely the best choice. Plenty of nightlife, arts and things to do. Montego Bay gets old after you've been to the couple of decent places. Housing options will be better in Kingston as well. Search out some units on airbnb.com for short stays would be a good start for short term rental. Ocho Rios/St Ann area is really nice (just moved from Mobay to St Ann) and the nice thing it;s only an hour to Kingston and 90 minutes to Mobay.

Thanks for the response Rick, much appreciated.

I almost need to be within about 30/45 minutes from a decent airport.

You're kinda reading my mind, will probably find a decent rental condo in secure place for 3 months and do the "tour" and then settle in for 2 to 3 years ....

Thanks again, I'm anxious to discover another Island in the beautiful Caribbean !!! No matter which Island you're on, I've found the locals to be fantastic !!!!

It sounds like you have a well thought out plan. you will be very successful. I would only add to what Rick said that Kingston is big and busting, but you don't have access to great beaches and North coast resorts as you would in Montego Bay. Be aware of the security risks and you will be just fine.

Thank you, totally agree, security is my main focus.... Living in DR is truly a challenge for a Gringo !!!

Been robbed 3 times --- all times by the police .... not actually theft really, you need to think of it as Tax !!! (we call it extortion in North America)

It's a "perception thing" hahahahahha

Can't really blame a guy for a bit of robbery when he makes $200/mth ..... they don't take much either .... about $50 US per required "donation" and they're polite !!!

Gotta love DR !!! :))
