My Australian friend is moving to Tokyo soon. But it seems difficult for expats to find a house /apartment for rent in Tokyo.. Can anyone tell me some ways of searching properties for rent in Tokyo?
I'd love to be helpful for my buddy!

Hi Roy,

Searching for an apartment in Tokyo is relatively easy. The hard part is having the proper documents/items for the application process which acts as the background check. You should tell your friend to have the following items:
1. copy of passport or residence card
2. copy of health insurance card
3. proof of employment
4. income statement
5. emergency contact (must live in Japan and be fluent in Japanese)
6. a contact number (or mobile number) in Japan
7. a Japanese bank account

Have your friend prepare all the above before searching for apartments- if he/she doesn't have everything, the application will most likely be declined and the apartment will go to the next qualified applicant. (source: I work for a company in Tokyo that offers a full-care package service for foreigners, and we often come across this problem)

Hope this helps!
