bringing a computer to Kazakhstan

I am going to be moving to Almaty in January 2009. I am a skilled film maker and plan to do some projects while there. One big question I have is whether to bring my Macintosh G5 editing computer with me or purchase another there. Does anyone know how much of a customs issue bringing a desktop computer into Kazakhstan from abroad is?

We shipped our desktop without too much problem, but our company handled the customs issue for us. Customs can be hit or miss and they tend to change the policy month to month. Purchasing a computer in Almaty (particularly a Mac) is going to be quite expensive even if you find what you are looking for. If I were you, I would pack the computer into your luggage and just bring it with you that way. No one will bother you at the airport.

First off everything in Kazakhstan is done through relationships. If you don't have relationship then you will pay more for everything.

On your computer chances are if they don't see it then it won't be a problem. But if they do see it or something else and they want to get a bribe. Then they will bring you into the "office" and have a little talk.

Depending of how good of a bluffer you are and how much patience you have will determine how much you pay.

So it is hit and miss but if you miss how much you pay depends on how you handle the situation. If your really determined you could wind up paying nothing but count on being in that office at least an hour.

If someone from your receiving organization is there that will be beneficial.

I have been back and forward with my laptop in my bag and no one has been the slightest bit interested. When we moved to Almaty we brought in 3 desktop computers and again there was no problem. My husband works for a big company so that probably helped but other people have not mentioned anything about computers its more likely customs will want a bribe to release your shipment generally, they seem to usually claim you TV is new. Try and bring everything in in plain boxes new stuff attracts tax of a random amount.

Bring all the stuff you need, its very expensive here and the supply is very hit and miss.
