I am a freelance writer, living in Salwa. I am from the US and while I love it here, I miss my book clubs and my female friends. I am slowly learning Arabic but not as quickly as I would like so if anyone can reccomend a good Arabic course in the area, I would really appreciate it. Thanks in advance!

Hi, Thanks for the advice. I had read about the Ramadan course there and was very interested in that. I will definitely check into their language courses. I tried to do as much reading as possible about Kuwait and the Middle East before we moved here (as if I needed an excuse to buy more books! Thankfully, I have a very understanding husband, he doesn't seem to mind continually purchasing or building bookcases.). One of my biggest pet peeves is people ranting about how much they dislike a new place when they haven't attempted to learn about- or at least respect- the new culture and/or traditions. Ok, I am climbing down from my soapbox now. I am enjoying Kuwait, I just need to socialize a little more. My computer doesn't do a lot of talking back.

Hello, For Arabic courses, try the AWARE Center (www.aware.com.kw)
As for book clubs you should check out Q8 books.com or something similar. It's a nice used bookstore in Kuwait City that might be able to help you. Hope this helps!

Thank your for the advice. I can't wait to visit Q8 books. Do you know if there are any poetry readings and/or book signings in Kuwait? Or volunteer opportunities that are book related? I started a book drive in the United States that delivers books to ill children in hospitals (I have a friend there who will continue the program in my absence. My book club there also helps out with it.) I have taught ESL classes, read to the elderly, etc. I am going to take the AWARE classes to improve my Arabic and learn to read in Arabic but would also enjoy doing something that gives something back to my new community. Thanks again!
