Hi
I’m moving from nyc to luxembourg next year and i was wondering if anyone has/know if it’s hard to ship a car to lux from the us.
It’s a used Mercedes glc 2016. Do i have to pay vat? Is there much paperwork? Any tips or advices are welcome.
Thank you

Hello. I researched this several years ago when moving to Luxembourg and this is what I found at the time (which I doubt has changed). My understanding of the law is that the car can be shipped to Europe free of vat as long as you have owned it at least 6 months and it has at least 5000 miles on it. It sounds like you would meet both of those requirements.

You should also consider the potential costs of modifications to make the vehicle compliant with European regulations. My recollection is that there were some modifications required for the headlights. I don't think it is terribly expensive. But it might be worth calling a garage in Luxembourg (or Germany) to get an estimate of the cost. Good luck!

Yeah you'll most likely have to pay the VAT for any country you ship a car to, probably along with some other fees too (in addition to the shipping cost). There's a company called a1 auto transport, inc. that ships between the U.S. and European countries -- you might try them to learn about the finer points of the process. I'd make sure you have a good understanding of everything involved before going forward with it.

Speak to someone regarding the necessary adjustments needed to import the car. Besides the fees, there may be modifications necessary to import the vehicle. I know there is in the other direction as we considered being a vehicle back to the US with us.
