Mexican Auto insurance

We will be driving to Mexico to retire around May 9, 2005. Several Mexican insurance companies offer policies that you buy with a credit card and print out your policy on your home computer.

Are these companies reliable? Has anyone else done this? WIll they accept these policies at the border?

I liked Zurich the best. Does anybody deal with them?

You probably will not be asked at the border for proof of auto insurance and you will probably find that there are several booths trying to sell you Mexican auto insurance. However, you might also find out that by buying what appears to be cheap insurance over the internet or at one of the border booths will be a clause in the policy that automatically cancels the policy in the event of an accident. That's what happened to us and it took about 6 months to finally get the underwriter to pay up after we made several complaints to the Mexican authorities.

I would suggest contacting our insurance agent, Juan Chong, who speaks excellent english and has a great reputation here in Mazatlan. His e-mail address is: [email protected]

It depends on where you cross. In Texas southbound traffic is checked and if the car has a lienholder, you must have a permission letter and that letter only comes when you have proof of Mexican Insurance.

Also, the 72-hour myth is no longer applicable. Technically all visitors to Mexico must get the FMM (it's free for less than 7 days). So you will need get the FMM and because insurance is now law, you have to show proof of Mexican Insurance.

If you cross into Sonora or Baja you will be in the free zone and almost no one gets stopped. The place to do immigration paperwork is not a mandatory stop. No one checks insurance there. I suggest you have it though. Take the advice of the poster that gave you his agent and contact him. It is easy and the thing to do. When I first started coming down here I used a internet co. and had no problems but did not have a claim.

ITS THE LAW in MX.

You must have at least Liability Insurance or they confiscate your car.

Yet they can drive here no problem
