RV travel in Mexico

Hi all,

We are planning to move to Mexico in a couple of years. I have spent hours reading all of the different forums and articles.

My question is Can you travel from the US into Mexico on a FMT with a RV?
I plan on spending weeks looking at different cities and different areas. Hotel bills could be very expensive. Are there any RV parks in Mexico?

Dear Azferret,

You bet you can bring your RV into Mexico with you on an FMT. You can get both your FMT and your permit for your RV (as well as insurance for the RV) as you cross the border into Mexico.

Your plan of seeing different cities is a smart one because each region and each city has its own character. Just be forewarned that driving in Mexico is harder than in the U.S. In general there are no pull outs, no passing lanes, and no shoulders. There are, on the other hand, lots of speed bumps, very narrow, windy lanes, lots of large cargo vehicles, and motorcycles that squeeze into places they shouldn't. Driving a large vehicle like an RV can be downright exhausting. Plan to drive in short stints and enjoy all the wonderful scenery, people, foods, and culture along the way. Driving in Mexico makes "stopping to smell the roses" a necessity, so live it up.

Yes there are RV parks in Mexico, especially near all of the more typical tourist destinations. Just Google "RV Park" and the name of a city or state in Mexico and you should find one or two options at least. You may also be able to find a guide book specifically for RVing in Mexico. I've seen one for Baja, but I assume that you are headed to the interior of Mexico.

Enjoy your trip. I'm sure it will be enriching and unforgettable.

Sincerely, Julia Taylor
