Finding jobs + Guadalajara

Hello, I am considering moving to Mexico. I speak both English and Spanish. I am writing because I would like to know if there are job opportunities for Americans in cities like Guadalajara or Monterrey OTHER than teaching ESL? Also, if I decide to do ESL is it possible to work only Monday-Fridays?

alellis09,

I'll just answer the ESL part of your question. You can check out my articles about teaching ESL in Mexico on my web site (click on "articles" at the right). Yes, you can work Monday through Friday -- if you don't need the money. Your bosses might put pressure on you to work Saturdays, but if you are a good teacher and a native speaker, they won't fire you over it. I was able to work only weekdays, just like you want to.

alellis09,

I live in Monterrey, and I can't speak for Guadalajara, but here there are jobs for foreigners here, especially in international companies or the consulates.

Unlike most Mexican businesses, many international companies do not work Saturdays.

Most of the foreigners who work here were contracted from their home countries and therefore get their paperwork sorted before they even arrive in Mexico, although it is possible to arrive here and start looking for a job.

Good luck!

Can only speak for Torreon, but if my husband's company were to hire a US national here in Mexico, they would be paid Mexican wages... much lower than US. And it would be an effort to do so, as there are plenty of nationals with more than adequate qualifications, plus the company and/or individual would need to apply for and obtain the appropriate work visas. Also, the companies here in Torreon all work Saturdays.... and if you are in manufacturing, many of them are running shifts 24/7 so it is possible that even some salaried personnel are working other than regular daytime hours. In the five years I have lived here I have never heard of a US national being hired after moving independently to Mexico.... only corporate employees from US and other countries being moved here.

THanks, how can I find such jobs, or is it all luck? Do you like living in Monterrey?
