Moving from Austin, TX to Monterrey, MX

Post New Topic

So I am wondering if anyone has anything to say about this move. I would be playing for the Monterrey Symphony, so I have a job, but I don't speak the language and would be giving up a lot to make this move. Is it worth it? Is Monterrey a nice place to live? Know of any places to live right now?
Any and ALL help with the potential move process would be great. (as of right now I am probably just going to drive a car full of belongings to save money)

Thanks in advance!

Hi jdtrumpet,

I am a Brit and have lived in Monterrey for a couple of years now. I really love it here - it's a pretty big city, and the heat takes some getting used to (although maybe not so much for someone coming from Austin!).

A lot of people from younger generations speak really good English, although most people aged 40 and older only know the basics, so some basic Spanish would be useful.

I sell a guidebook to living in Mty for $25 USD if you're interested. It's 75 pages of practical information, updated annually. We will be releasing the 2009-2010 edition in about a month, but if you can't wait that long, the 2008-2009 edition is still highly recommended. I can even send it to you via PDF so you can have it right away.

For more info on relocation services and the guide, see

or email me at laura@integra-mty.com

Good luck!

JD, I am here in Round Rock. Moving to Saltillo which is an hour away from Monterrey.

Don't know much about the area yet. It's part of the adventure.

I am supposed to go down the week of Aug 10. Hope to figure out some of the details of the move then.

When are you supposed to move?

What a great opportunity to live in Mexico, probably travel to other parts of the country, and to learn the language. Mexico enjoys a high level of appreciation of music and the arts. You are going to love it!

Saltillo!
Yea man, I am glad that you are coming too!
We should meet up sometime to talk about specifics of how we are going to move. Sounds like you have to do it about 20 days before I do, so we should get a move on!

It is a great place with wonderful people. I built manufacturing plants in Mexico for about 12 years. When I started I had no Spanish. I learned on the job from the Mexican people......they're the best.
