Areas with the best prospects for finding a University job

I realize that this is really broad question but I haven't yet had the chance to go to Mexico. The job market starts in June and I will be in Turkey until then. I was really hoping to get a heads up so that I could focus on a realistic search area. I don't want to be situated in too rural an area. Basically an area that has a lot of Universities would be great. Thanks

Hos geldiniz efendim, and welcome to the forum. I lived in and around Izmir for a few years in the 1959-1963 era and still miss the people and the food. However, having retired to Mexico in 2001, we are quite happy, and you may be as well.
I would suggest that you contact universities and the appropriate job sites for Mexico, assuming that you are fluent in Spanish. A prospective employer will have to assist you in getting a work visa for Mexico and it would be advantageous to have something lined up before you arrive. For living quality, climate, access to airport and the Pacific beaches, you might want to start with the University of Guadalajara. Let us know how you progress in your quest and your qualifications, certifications, etc. Some forum members may be able to point you in the right direction.

You will have to apply on site--don't even bother through email. Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey are the largest cities and all have literally dozens of universities. Even small cities will have 3 or more. Spanish fluency is NOT a requirement to teach in most major private universiities since many courses are actuyally taught in English. If you want to teach English you only need be a native speaker. Get an apostille of your degree/degrees before you come. (I have taught a a couple different universities here in Mexico).

Oh, there are so many universities, and their satellites. Guadalajara is a good place to start. The weather forecasts kept showing Guadalajara with low temps between 4 and 10 Celsius, but I have not felt that cold inside my hotel. I am in Guadalajara now. The University of Guadalajara is public and best known within the city; Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara is private.

There are satellite campuses of a few universities in Ciudad Guzman, including U. of Guad., maybe 1 hour southwest of Guadalajara.

Colima, 2.5 hours southwest of Guad., has a public university, U. of Colima. The city can be damned hot.

Tepic, Nayarit, 3 hours northwest of Guad., has a public university, Universidad Autonoma de Nayarit, within walking distance of the bus station.

Again, there are SO MANY universities.

Private universities (e.g Tec de Monterrey, Iberoamericano, Desalles, etc.) pay MUCH better than public ones and it is easier to get hired by the private universiites.

Now that I am no longer holding the hand of a Mexican boyfriend while seeing touristic sights in Guadalajara, I don´t recommend Guadalajara so much. Mexicans in the past month have told me that Guadalajara is unsafe. There are some areas here that look scary, near the city´s Centro.

Plus, there is a lot of cigarette smoking here, even in Internet cafes (this Internet cafe even provides ash trays). I have witnessed cigarette smoking in 2 Internet cafes here, out of 3 visited. 2 of the cybers had very slow Internet. Plus, there was smoking by an employee at my hotel´s counter, and in the restaurant next door during breakfast. I don´t recall any cigarette smoking in any of the Internet cafes that I used in other cities of Mexico.

Thanks everyone for all of the advice. I really appreciate it and it has helped me to focus my search. Would anyone have an idea of a good directory I could use for finding public or private universities in some of these areas? Thanks again.

If you use a map to find cities that seem appealing to you, and then look each of them up using wikipedia.org, Wikipedia will usually provide a list of universities at the bottom of the article on the city.

Of some help is
http://www.4icu.org/
with lists of universities in each country.

There´s also http://licenciatura.emagister.com.mx

For finding universities with medical programs, you can use http://med.unne.edu.ar/facultades/mexico.htm
or https://imed.faimer.org/
