great political protest

Here in Xalapa, the capital of the state of Veracruz, there was a great political protest going on this morning, and it may still be going on.

In the park, I heard a roar of voices. I walked towards the roar.Several drummers were drumming a rhythmic, battle-like beat, which reverberated in my throat and fingers. People were along both sides of the street Enriquez, moving their feet, like in a war dance. They rhythmically thrust their signs and fists into the air. When the pedestrian signal turned green, the protesters roared and whistled and entered the street, "dancing" in the street. When the pedestrian signal turned red, they returned to the sidewalk to protest in front of the vehicles that passed us by.

Although the U.S. State Department recommends against it for your safety, it is an educational experience to get up close to a Latin American political demonstration. In the USA, I have never seen a political protest like what I saw this morning. In the USA, we do not have this culture of protesting to this degree. I´ve seen big protests on TV that occurred in Oaxaca that got out of hand, and I wondered how they could get that way. Now I understand. When people are dancing to battle-like music, as if in a rock concert, I can see how things can go crazy.
