Are there any Classic or Collector car clubs in the Lake Chapala area? Also, can I import my cars when I move. I have several and plan to bring up to 3 with me, if possible. All of my cars are 40 years old or older.
Any information on insurance would also be appreciated. Thanks!

There is an active club in Guadalajara, which often conducts rallies to Chapala on weekends.
Permanent Importation of antique/classic cars is different than importation of others & you may be restricted in quantity. It will also depend upon your immigration status. You will need to consult the Aduana website for details, but exportation comes first, using a customs broker at the border, and it will be expensive....really expensive.

mexico considers any vehicle over 20 years old as 'junk'. u cant register it. and if u park it on the street or get caught driving it, it will b towed with u paying big time

MRTD, Don't waste your time studying the Aduana manual. Contact a custom broker at the port of entry you want to use. Tell them exactly what you want to import, include all your vehicles, The broker will determine the eligibility, explain the process and determine the costs. A broker handles the governments requirements for you.

Costs are relative to ones wallet, RV. Expensive for you could be pocket change for someone else who loves his cars.

Grapenut, your post is pure BS. 3 years ago I imported a 1987 car. Doing the math, that is 27 years old. No problem getting State plates either. 45,000 miles later and still drove it today.

Check yucatanexpatriate services.com. for detailed info on bringing a vehicle into Mexico. I know little about that 20 year lifespan for cars in Mexico but that post smells.

Looks like I may be wrong. Baja Insider seems to support the age limits on vehicles brought in from US and Canada. One would think there might be an exemption for classics. I guess a Mercedes gull wing is just junk to them, otherwise.

let me clarify what i meant. keep ur original license on vehicle. but if u try to register for Mexican plates it aint going t happen. my landlord has a 1988 dodge pickup he wants to sell me. it has texas plates on vehicle. he drivers it all over ciudad Juarez and he has no problem but he tried to register it in mexico and was told it was too old. so i looked it up on comp mx dmv and found that anything over 20 years old could not be licenced in mexico. dmv considers anything over 20 years old as junk

Mexico has free zones, generally up to about 20 miles south of the border, or north of their southern border, too.
Baja and Baja Sur, and some of Sonora are also free zones, where the usual vehicle restrictions do not apply.
The interior of mainland Mexico does require temporary importation for tourists and temporary residents with any vehicle currently legally registered in their home jurisdiction, regardless of age.
Check with a Mexican antique/classic car club for specific details in that classification.
Generally speaking, the permanent importation of a vehicle into Mexico is not an economical, or even practical thing to consider. Only vehicles of a certain very specific (but always moving) age are even eligible.
After all, Mexico makes cars, trucks and buses. In fact my Nissan, bought in the USA, from a US dealer, was made in one of the three very modern robotic plants in Mexico. Most brands have factories there, and ship a huge percentage of the cars sold in the USA: Freightliner trucks, too, to the surprise of many Teamsters.

Hey RV, you should include Quintana Roo in your free zone list. If we need a TIP, we border Belize.

I have a friend that buys cars in the AZ and CA, legally imports them into Mexico, hauls them to Ciudad Guzman and resells them for a profit. This is his family business.

When you used to live at Lakeside, did you ever go to the Guadalajara car flea market? Lots of freshly imported cars for sale. They are making money on those too.

If a used $5000 car cost $1500 import and can sell for $8500 in Mexico, how is this not economical?

RV, legally importing a car is practical. It is really very easy and effortless. I have imported lots of things over the years, cars, golf carts, battery operated scooters, and other merchandise. This is not a "DIY" process. Aduana and US Customs will only work with a bonded broker, not you or me.

RVgringo, you have done a great job sharing your time everyday. You patiently answer the same questions over and over again. People look to you as a go to source. You are helpful. You have filled some of the information void online since Rolly’s passing. ( www.rollybrook.com , still a lot of good info on there)

BUT, sometimes you need to change your answers.
