Opinions on the election today

Mexico has always ben on my radar as a retirement destination. Not at the top of the list but I looked into it quite hard about 8 years back. Now I am on another forum where I am currently residing. A lot of talk on it lately about Mexico becoming unstable due to the political situation and the election today. I am quite curious about any thoughts from those on the ground. What the short term and long-term effect of Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador may be. Any thoughts of anyone selling/relocating?

You may think it’s funny but here in Colombia we had an ex-gorilla running. Luckily, he lost in the election a couple weeks ago, but there was a lot of talk of relocating by expats here. We only have to look next door to Venezuela to see how badly things can go. We are in close proximity to Ecuador so many discussed moving across the border.
Only time will tell how he will govern but there was a lot of talk of nationalizing the oil sector and price controls. That’s exactly how it started in Venezuela.

I have learned that Duque;s campaign was funded by the US/Trump, and that the Monday after the election, he was in Washington.

We will assume you mean ex-guerrilla. An "ex-gorilla" running for office would be worth watching! :)

But in response to your original question, we certainly have no plans to leave Mexico, unless US interference creates an untenable situation which cannot presently be foreseen - and that is always a possibility in any country.

oops, meant for the Colombia forum! Im sure that the US/Trump has little to do with AMLO!

Personally, I am excited!!! AMLO will be the best thing that has happened to Mexico since Juarez!
Nationalize the oil industry, yes, please, keep the money for the people of Mexico, not multinationals.
Stop fighting americas drug war, stop the killing!
Better universal healthcare and free universities for citizens.
Maybe he can pull Trudeau a little more to the Left!!
Viva la Revolucion Victoria Siempre!:--)

What an inane bunch of drivel. Should one give credence to a man who knows so little about what he is speaking that he doesn't even seem to know what MORENA stands for? The way AMLO governed in MExico City does not at all suggest a Castro or Chavez wannabe, but rather someone who was pragmatic, willing to compromise, and eager to build coalitions. It appears that Mr. Morris hasn't really done his research, and is just trying to gin up fear that he can parlay into political clout himself. WHen he says "but I worked in the successful campaigns to defeat him in 2006 and 2012" he seems not to realize that it was a national campaign for the presidency, in a multi-party system (unlike the US) not a referendum on AMLO.

There are plenty of other things to be concerned about with AMLO though. His platform is not really very clear, and there a millions of people expecting him to work miracles in a very short time - the problems are far too immense to be repaired very simply. We also have to wonder what the US will do. We know that trump is not interested in policy or substance. It’s all about labels and image, and the fact that AMLO labels himself as a socialist will automatically create problems.

Idealism and enthusiasm are never "drivel" kikipt, and reality is not so perfect nor will it ever be, however that is no reason to stifle the dreamers. Democratic socialism is all about pragmatism, compromise and coalition building - how else could it address the needs of the populace at large? I know nothing of Mr. Amlo having lived in Mexico only 8 months and still learning Spanish, but I hope you are right about his pragmatism - he will need it, and a lot of good luck!

Dick Morris from US? No thanks, idiot in US..can't expect any better in MX.

Our hope's are AMLO is successful. Doubt it can be worse than America. Give him time, huge job to turn the ship around. Good Luck to all of us..

I hope for the best. The working people of Mexico also need a hero.

Kipkipt that is also how I read it. Someone who works to help the people.

kikipt
  7/3/2018 02:27 EST

larryo - did you read the Morris article? It was pretty short on idealism or enthusiasm, neither of which I have ever called drivel, so please be courteous enough not to try to put words in my mouth. Mr. Morris' writing is indeed drivel, full of specious and ill fitting arguments, and short on facts - exactly as are his articles on US politics. Since I have been a socialist my entire life, I am hardly going to knock AMLO before he has had a chance to do something, even though he is facing unbelievable odds. I would hope he might fulfill the dream of Yucatán's Felipe Carrillo Puerto, who was the first socialist expected to have served as Mexico's president - before the powers of greed and corruption assassinated him! Perhaps we can hope for a better outcome now that a century has passed - the problems, however, are almost identical.

larryoinpdx

kikipt - No, I didn't see the Morris article - I thought Dick Morris was dead! I thought you were talking about LeiaRowan's post. I will have to go back and find the Morris article. Sorry about the misunderstanding.

giershift43

Sounds correct to me!!

kikipt
  7/3/2018 10:03 EST

CLK32 - That is exactly right. And, as in the past, we can expect them to use every shenanigan available to preserve their privilege and destroy efforts to help the people at large, including the same techniques used universally, such as manipulating media and public perceptions to get the poor to believe the abuses perpetrated against them are for their own welfare. There will doubtless be a lot of fear-mongering and scapegoating, which is much of what the Dick Morris article was trying to start.
