Hello. I'm ready to leave the U.S. rat race and move to my dream location of a beach in Mexico. I'm 55 and want to enjoy the life I've dreamed of before it's too late. I'll take any advice anyone is willing to share. I'd like to live in a safe beach community, and I'll have a limited income. Any suggestions? Your help is much appreciated.

First of you should decide on which coast you want to live. Cancun to Tulum or Puerto Vallarta to Guabitos. Secondly rental, condo or house. Anything within 50 km of the coastline (except rentals) has a bank trust called Fideicomiso. You pay a yearly amount to bank of your choice and property is yours, with all rights, for 50 years and can be renewed. When planning t o buy make damn sure you have a mexican will!! Your US will is not legal here. Other questions to ask yourself are: How do you cope with very high humidity, how far away from bigger stores do you want to live, mixed community or only expats, close to an international airport?? Personally I like the areas around Puerto Vallarta better, more of a mexican feel. North of the city are many smaller beachtown community's like San Francisco, Guayabitos, Sayulita and others. Best way is to really come here, rent a condo and explore for yourself. Take your time because this is for the rest of your life. Any questions just ask. We have been living by Chapala for 3 years, I can't handle humidity, mountains are perfect for us. Cheers !!

Another wonderful area to check out is south from Acapulco. Beautiful small beach town called Puerto Escondido. Barra de Navidad and San Patricio are just north of Manzanillo and very beautiful, lots of expats and not yet very expensive. If you are looking at gated community you might pay more money than in a mixed neighbor hood. I do not believe that you are safer behind a gate. If you are open minded towards the culture and people, try to speak spanish, even a little, you will find out how welcomed you actually are. We live in a mixed area and love it.

I also looked at the Puerto Escondido area but medical needs are too far away. I ended up in San Carlos, Sonora on the Sea of Cortez. 4 hrs to Tucson and in the free zone (google it). Downside is hot and humid in the summer but it is not a problem for me. I think for Mexico it is heaven. I think 70% snowbird here. If interested whatsupsancarlos.com
