Instead of soliciting what will be narrow, anectodal reports (no one will admit if their area is dangerous), look up some solid stats.

For crime search State Violence Trends Mexico Crime Report. There is a great map there showing in bubble form the murder rates for most cities. There are also graphs per type of violent crime per state. All data is up-to-date on a rolling 12-month period.

For economic data, try Numbeo, It is compiled user-supplied data, but it's only reliable for larger cities because of that. Shows several dimensions of living standards such as prices, rents, healthcare and crime ratings.

You probably should also check climate after you've narrowed your search and for that, none is better than weatherspark.

Look at every site with critical thinking, because none know it all. I have found many errors or missing information on even the best sites (like the one mentioned in this thread elsewhere).

When it comes to topics such as immigration, be aware that INM offices can and do work under their own rules in different states. Something you could do easily in one, will have hurdles in another.

Good luck,

We have lived in Merida for four years, all of what is said above about this great city is true from our experience.

This is from the experience of one who has just done a trip to Merida for scouting and obtaining residency, so I no means have the experience of others who have lived there long term. I will say that for us, Merida checks the "safety" box, at least from the center of town west, and north to Avenida Colon, which is the majority of our exploring and our only on-the-ground experience. We walked all through those streets, day and night. Every local we ran into and with whom we had more than a few words of conversation told us how they love the safety of Merida. Ditto for 2 expats we conversed with. The police presence seems high, and they have an extensive system of public surveillance cameras.

I was told by two different locals that thieves are quickly caught, and that if there is a major incident in another region, the police have the ability to shut off all access to the city at checkpoints on all major arteries leading into Merida. I was also told the Police Commissioner has been there for 24 years, because he is well-liked and knows exactly what's going on in the city. I don't know how accurate any of that is since it is conversation with others that I am passing along.
