Hello, Would anyone have an idea on the best way to obtain a used car in Morocco. I am looking for an automatic rather than a manual transmission, as that is what I am used to. I understand automatic cars are hard to find here? Any sources, links, dealerships, anything at all would be much appreciated as I am starting from scratch and have no contacts. Many thanks!
Hi, one good place to look is on a website called "www.voitureaumaroc.com". It lists sales all over Morocco. I just sold my car there. However, you want to be careful of scams, and any car you buy second hand you had best triple check the condition of the car with a reputable garage, before finalizing the sale. Also, many people try to sell cars that are imported and on which the customs have not been paid. Some of these cars are stolen, so again, be careful. As I too want to buy a secondhand car, someone offered me an automatic Honda Jazz from 2009 (thus still under warranty). They are great little cars. The budget was more than I can spend, but if it interests you send me a PM and I will pass you the sellers' details.
Please be careful when buying an automatic car. When I first moved to Agadir I brought over an automatic car with a view to registering it here. Unfortunately my car broke down and NO mechanics (I tried loads) were able to fix an automatic. When I looked to buy a new car I found that the price of second hand cars is far higher than in the UK and in some circumstances it is best to add the little extra and buy a new car with a full warranty. My friend recently sold a Moroccan registered 2000 Fiat Uno for the equivalent of £4000 which I personally think is too much money for a car with no mod cons such as air con, central locking, power steering, electric windows etc. Also, to put the car in your name you will need to be a resident of Morocco, i.e. have a resident's permit issued. The only way around this is to put the car in someone else's name which you may not wish to do. I don't have a lot of experience of buying and selling cars in Morocco, but I have been through the process and am happy to answer any queries you may have.
Hi Evey, Thanks for the useful information. I managed to find a Honda jazz at a reasonable price and have bought it. Have not been able to locate a mechanic yet.But I will take your advice and perhaps only take it to the Honda mechanic in Rabat
If you haven't already chosen, we decided to buy new and chose a Dacia Duster as we didn't like the new version (or cost) of the Mitusubishi Pajero. Also because there's a Renault-Dacia dealership in Essaouira and so service, etc. can be obtained locally. If you have evidence of a regular income in Morocco, they offer an interest free credit of 3, 4, or 5 years, depending on age/income, if you can pay half of the cost up front.
