cost of moving to US?

i would be interested to know how much you spent on shipping and/or travelling to the US when you moved (from europe)? i still don't know where we will be moving but Atlanta or Boston are on the list, did you take things like your beds and shelves and kitchen utensils or is it just better to sell up over here and buy new? what about things like books? we have a whole wall full of books on shelves. some advice from any of the more travelled amongst you would be great! it'll be our first country move and with a 4 and 3 year old too!
