Melbourne is probably the most European city in Australia, but Perth has much much better air quality (health benefit, especially for your son). Adelaide is also quite a nice city, smaller than other major cities like Melb or Syd, but housing prices are about the same. Depends also on your job, as different parts of the country will offer different opportunities. Perth is a mining city, not much going on there. Melbourne and Sydney are of course your best options for any type of business or tech work (or rany normal jobs, like receptionist, shop assistant, etc). Brisbane is a medium sized city, a mini version of Sydney with what it offers. Probably a lot safer and more family-oriented. There's also Darwin, but I wouldn't recommend it unless you really like hot weather all year round. Same with Cairns. That leaves you with Canberra, which is a very small city, less diversity than Sydney or Melbourne, but good business opportunities.
